I present to the internet community the IP addresses that have been banned from my blog. I do not encourage harassment of these people; this is only intended as a service to other webmasters who wish to preemptively ban spammers and other inappropriate users.
Currently all banned IPs are by reason of spam. If other reasons, such as inappropriate sexual comments, become an issue, the reason will be listed next to the IP address.
Award Winners:
201.250.111.59: Unique spam award–the Chicken Noodle Pornographer
89.253.241.228: Current holder (as of 9-16-2007) of a “Dude, you thought that would go through?” award for too many links to count…multiple screens’ worth!!
71.207.100.57: Former holder (from 6-10-2007 to 9-16-2007) of the “Dude, you thought that would go through?” award, for 42 links in one comment
216.255.177.218: Former holder (from 5-8-2007 to 6-10-2007) of the “Dude, you thought that would go through?” award, for 23 links, all apparently to porn (I didn’t look, but when the links are labeled things like “wild nasty sex” it doesn’t take a psychic)
91.124.253.169: Former holder (from 4-26-2007 to 5-8-2007) of the “Dude, you thought that would go through?” award, for 34 links, 19 of them pharmaceutical-related, with a russian e-mail address, in one attempted comment. Seriously.
86.108.83.128: Holder of a “WTF?” award, for trying to make it sound impressive that they sell Motrin without a prescription. No, really?
24.181.244.79: Multilingual spam award. I think this one was in Italian. It’s not Spanish but there are lots of cognates. Not French or Portuguese either, I know what both of those look like.
83.84.66.109: Apparently the same thing.
81.196.203.253: Holder of a Dramatically Non-Repeatable URL Award. For starters, the word “sex” appears in that URL 4 times…in amongst various profane and scatological words. Seriously, who thinks of these?

Thanks for the list. I’ve been looked at the IPs from comments that I’ve marked as spam and found your site when I stuck one of them in yahoo. I’m going to ban them from my whole server.

Most of these are probably proxies anyway, which is both good and bad. Proxies are used by a lot of spammers but also by a lot of ordinary people, so by blocking the IP of a proxy you are effectively banning all users of that proxy from your site whether good or bad. A much less user restrictive way would have been to set up a filter and not accept any comments with certain words in. I use that on mine and it works a charm, plus anyone can still access my site by proxy.

I did think about the proxy issue, actually. However, there’s nothing controversial on my site that would make it necessary to view it through a proxy (last I checked, even people behind the Chinese firewall could see it). Also, the bounce page contains an e-mail link for if people think they’re being blocked in error (which is probably where some of the spam in my inbox is coming from, but I have a delete key for that). I’ve had several blocked IPs attempt spamstorms, and if I were relying on a word filter to catch all that, I would’ve burned through bandwidth and CPU time for nothing.
I’ve heard about some bloggers and site admins range-blocking entire Eastern European countries. That’s overkill…and for that I can see how keeping it accessible to proxies would be an issue so that humans can see it. I haven’t banned any ranges as yet, though there are a few small ranges I’m looking at because of the sheer density of spammers.
